Overview

Six days provides an excellent rhythm for a first Tanzania safari, linking Lake Manyara, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire without turning every day into a long transfer. Although part of the day is spent travelling onward, the route continues to add context to the journey as the surroundings gradually change. There is no need to treat the transfer as a rushed section of the itinerary; instead, it provides time to observe the countryside and understand how the different destinations fit together geographically. Your guide handles the route and timing, allowing you to settle into the journey and arrive prepared for the next stage.

Your Journey

Day by Day Itinerary

Explore Tanzania through a carefully planned journey combining wildlife, landscapes and comfortable accommodation. The day is deliberately paced so there is time to appreciate the experience between the major sightings as well as the wildlife itself. Your guide can adjust the rhythm according to conditions on the ground, allowing longer stops when an interesting encounter develops and moving on when appropriate. This creates a more natural safari experience, with opportunities for photography, observation and simply taking in the changing landscapes rather than treating the route as a fixed timetable.

Day 1: Arusha – Lake Manyara National Park

Leave Arusha after breakfast and travel to Lake Manyara National Park. Spend the day exploring the park's groundwater forest, woodland and lake-edge environments beneath the Rift Valley escarpment. Watch for monkeys in the forest, elephants moving through dense vegetation and the varied birdlife associated with the lake. Continue to your accommodation in the Manyara or Karatu area.

Day 2: Ngorongoro Highlands – Serengeti

Travel through the highlands and descend toward the Serengeti ecosystem. Enter Serengeti National Park and begin an afternoon game drive on the way to your lodge or camp. The transition into the open plains is one of the memorable moments of a northern safari. A steady and sustainable pace remains important throughout the day. Your mountain team will manage the rhythm of the walk according to trail and weather conditions, while regular rest, hydration and sensible energy conservation help you prepare for the stages still ahead. The aim is not to move quickly, but to make controlled progress while giving your body time to respond to the increasing elevation. The changing mountain environment also gives each section of the route its own character.

Day 3: Full Day Serengeti

Spend a complete day in the Serengeti with the freedom to follow wildlife activity. Depending on the season, your guide may focus on resident predator territories, grazing herds, kopjes, river systems or areas associated with seasonal migration movement. Take a picnic lunch or return to camp according to the day's plan. As the route continues, the focus stays on measured progress rather than speed. Your guides will encourage a comfortable walking rhythm and monitor how the group is responding as conditions and elevation change. Rest, hydration and conserving energy remain important parts of the daily routine, particularly because the climb is a sequence of connected stages rather than a single day's effort. This approach also leaves time to notice the landscape and experience the changing environment around the trail.

Day 4: Serengeti – Ngorongoro

Enjoy a final morning in the Serengeti before travelling toward Ngorongoro. Continue game viewing during the drive, then climb into the highlands and settle into your accommodation near the crater. The cooler air and elevated scenery provide a dramatic contrast to the plains.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater – Karatu

Descend to the crater floor for a long game drive through grassland, marsh, woodland and lake habitat. Wildlife is present throughout the year, and the crater offers a particularly concentrated safari experience. After lunch, ascend and continue to Karatu for a relaxed evening.

Day 6: Tarangire National Park – Arusha

Drive to Tarangire for the final safari day. Explore the park's baobab landscapes and river corridor, taking time for a last picnic lunch and game drive. In the afternoon, return to Arusha, bringing the Northern Circuit journey to a close. The journey is treated as part of the overall experience rather than simply time spent moving between two points. As the scenery changes, you gain a broader impression of the landscapes connecting the different areas on the itinerary. The pace remains comfortable, with suitable stops made when needed, while your guide manages the practical details of the route. This helps the travelling portion of the day feel relaxed and connected to the safari rather than separate from it.
