Kilimanjaro Climbing

Climb Africa's Highest Mountain

Mount Kilimanjaro rises to 5,895 metres above sea level and offers one of the world's great non-technical high-altitude trekking challenges. Reaching Uhuru Peak does not require technical climbing on the standard trekking routes, but the altitude, changing weather and long summit day demand preparation, patience and respect for the mountain.

Choosing a Kilimanjaro Route

Machame Route

A popular camping route with varied scenery and a profile that allows useful acclimatization through a series of climbs and descents. Seven days is generally preferable to a shorter schedule because it provides more time at altitude.

Lemosho Route

A scenic western approach that begins more quietly and joins the main southern circuit higher on the mountain. Seven- and eight-day versions are popular with trekkers who want a gradual itinerary and more time to acclimatize.

Marangu Route

The best-known hut-based route on Kilimanjaro. Accommodation on the mountain is in designated huts rather than tents. The trail approaches from the southeast and follows the same general corridor for ascent and descent.

Rongai Route

Rongai approaches Kilimanjaro from the north and is often chosen by trekkers looking for a quieter trail and a different perspective on the mountain. Descent is normally via the Marangu side.

Altitude Matters

Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude trek. Fitness helps, but acclimatization is critical and altitude affects people differently. A slower itinerary, steady walking pace, hydration, rest and honest communication with the guide team are important throughout the climb. Travellers should obtain appropriate medical advice before undertaking a high-altitude trek.

Prepare for Changing Conditions

The climb passes through several ecological zones, and conditions can change from warm lower slopes to cold, exposed high-altitude terrain. Good boots, layered clothing, rain protection, warm summit gear and an appropriate sleeping system are essential. CTA: Find Your Kilimanjaro Route AFRIGIFFTOURS WEBSITE CONTENT
